How Eric Lefkofsky is Changing the Medical Field

Eric Lefkofsky is the founder of the digital database aggregate for medical research, Tempus. Lefkofsky knows firsthand that the medical research field is stuck in a quagmire of slow response time and poor research circulation. Lefkofsky knows that doctors need to be able to efficiently access data in order to make a difference with the life threatening diseases that are out there in the world, particularly cancer. Lefkofsky spoke in San Diego at the Fortune Brainstorm Health conference and it was there that he opened up about his work with Tempus.

Lefkofsky opened up his speech by pointing out one of the more important aspects of medical research, “Gathering molecular data is one thing, but you also need clinical data.” It’s pretty easy to see that there is a plethora of medical research data out there but the primary problem is that none of it gets to where it needs to go, where it can actually make a difference. Lefkofsky, for example, pointed to the sheer problem of accessing medical information relating to Herceptin. Lefkofsky said, “They’d need a grant and at least 90 days” in order to access that information. Information should be able to flow freely and that is what Tempus is trying to make happen.

The primary goal of Tempus is to take electronic medical records and put a thick layer of tech right over top of them. Data will then get aggregated to a database where it will be verified, validated, and sourced before ultimately getting sent back to the people who can use the data most. Improved data circulation can make a fundamental difference in the way doctors approach problems like cancer and Lefkofsky is going to try and make it happen.

Eric Lefkofsky has been around all over the tech world with a variety of different start ups. He is the co-founder of the famous website, Groupon. Lefkofsky also has his own charity, the Lefkofsky Family Foundation which he started back in 2006. The Lefkofsky Family Foundation focuses on bringing about ‘high impact’ initiatives to communities that are in desperate need of some sort of aid.
